The Murano and San Nicolò Committee
this year proposes to give new energy to the celebratory event of San Nicolò.

The goal is to bring all the craftsmen of Murano together to create a collection of unique pieces that enhance the expressive qualities of glass.
The proceeds from the works will go to the parish in charity.

This year’s creative theme “El bianco” represents lattimo – an opaque white glass, designed to resemble porcelain, when Chinese porcelain began to be marketed in Europe.

The dichotomy between opaque and transparent white takes up what has been done in past editions, with the aim of opening up new expressive possibilities deriving from individual skills and abilities.

“The first news of a milk-colored glass comes in the 14th century, when the word“ latimo ”appears in the creation of the white enamel mosaics of the cathedral of Orvieto.
… This particular type of glass is perfected to resemble porcelain as Chinese porcelain begins to be marketed in Europe.
And everything ends (almost) in oblivion until Abbot Vincenzo Zanetti “reinvents” Murano: the reopening of the furnaces, the Museum, the school and the exhibitions among masters.
Since then, the word “lattimo” has been used on the island to identify opaque white glass, regardless of the type of composition with which it is obtained and still today, companies
and artists make use of it in the realization of their works. “
